Maps by Paul
WELCOME to my web portfolio...
The purpose of this web page is to provide you with some examples of my work, but first allow me introduce myself.
My name is Paul Light. I am a graduate of the CARTOGRAPHY - DIGITAL MAPPING programme at the Centre of Geographic Sciences (COGS) at the Nova Scotia Community College. The Carto programme is intended to train people as cartographic technologists. During the first year, I learned how to apply cartographic techniques, publishing techniques, and statistical analysis to the production of maps using geographic information system, computer aided design, graphic design, and multimedia computer software. In second year, I continued to learn about other computer programs and their application to mapmaking. These computer software programs included AutoCAD® Map2002 and MicroStation® GeoGraphics® and Descartes®, for symbol and data creation, and map production; ArcView® 3.3, ArcGIS™ and GRASS GIS, for data creation, manipulation and presentation; CorelDRAW® Graphics Suite for data presentation; PCI Geomatica® for imagery interpretation and georectification; and Microsoft's® Office and Adobe® Acrobat® for statistical data production and document production.

In order to view my work you will require Adobe® Reader® and Marcromedia® Shockwave Player. If you do not have these, you may download them at:

Note: If you have your browser set to block ActiveX controls, you may have to allow their use in order to install and use Shockwave Player.
My cartographic projects involved the use of ArcView 3.3, ArcGIS, CorelDRAW Graphics Suite, AutoCAD, Land Enabled MAP, MicroStation, MicroStation GeoGraphics, Descartes, and Microsoft Office products, specifically MS Access and MS Excel for data preparation and manipulation. Some projects were completed using a single program, but most were accomplished using a combination of one of the geographic information systems and a graphics program. Some examples are:
☼ Fundy National Park trails map created with ArcGIS and CorelDRAW.
☼ a plate from my Forestry Atlas created with ArcGIS and CorelDRAW.
☼ a plate from my Nova Scotia Statistics Atlas created with ArcView and CorelDRAW.
☼ a map of Halifax created with ArcGIS and CorelDRAW, and symbolized to Canadian National Topographic Series standards.
☼ my major topographic project was a map of Cralispret, Fontinalia (a.k.a. Halifax, Nova Scotia). This project was completed using ArcGIS, CorelDraw and GRASS GIS as a prototype development exercise for the Pearson Peacekeeping Centre, Cornwallis, Nova Scotia. This project earned the 2005 Nova Scotia Community College, Annapolis Valley Campus, Centre of Geographic Sciences, Best Topographic in Cartography Award and the 2005 David Salter Memorial Award for best Cartographic Map or Project.
☼ a map of historic Halifax. This project, Fortress Halifax, Unchallenged Sentinel of the North, 1749 - 1880, was created using ArcGIS, CorelDRAW Graphics Suite and GRASS GIS. It depicts the defences of Halifax, Nova Scotia, circa 1870. It received an Honourable Mention at the 2006 American Congress on Surveying and Mapping 33rd Annual Map Design Competition.
☼ my major thematic project was a prototype development for an atlas, The National Parks & Historic Sites of Western Newfoundland and Labrador. It was created using ArcGIS and CorelDraw Graphics Suite. This project earned 1st place in the A la Carte category of the Canadian Cartographic Association President's Prize 2006 map competition, National Geographic Society’s New Mapmaker Award 2006, and 2006 Nova Scotia Community College, Centre of Geographic Sciences, Best Thematic Project in Cartography award.
Other types of projects involved the use of Corel R.A.V.E. for the creation of an animation and MS Word, MS PowerPoint® and Adobe Acrobat.
One of my research papers, The Evolution of the Nautical Chart, 13th to 19th Century, won the 2005 Canadian Cartographic Association Presidents Prize for the Best Student Paper award.
Finally, you may be interested in reviewing one more project. It is a short animation, My Caribbean Vacation, I created it using Corel R.A.V.E.
I would like to thank you for taking the time to review my work. I hope you have enjoyed it as much as I did creating it.
